Opening explorer

Start from move one and pick a move. Each move shows the named openings it leads to; the name of the position you're in links to its page.

Start position

How to use it

Every move in the list is one that leads into at least one named opening on the site. The number next to it counts the games in our lichess sample that reached the named line it starts. Click a move to play it on the board; the URL updates, so you can bookmark or share any position.

Questions

What is a chess opening explorer?

An opening explorer shows the moves played from a position and which named openings they lead to. Here every move is a named line with its own page, so you can click from 1.e4 down to the variation you face and read the plans.

Where do the moves and names come from?

Names and move orders come from the lichess opening list (CC0), with every move checked for legality. Game counts come from Lichess rated games, September 2025 (blitz, rapid and classical).
