Key ideas for both sides
White
- 3.Nc3 and e4 build a broad center without c4, as in the top engine line.
- Use Bb5+ or Bc4 to develop the light bishop actively, since the c4 square stays free.
- 3.c4 b5 4.cxb5 transposes to the Benko, so choose 3.c4 only if you know that territory.
Black
- Hit d5 with ...e6 and follow with ...d6 and ...Be7 or a fianchetto, aiming for Benoni structures.
- Against 3.Nf3, the gambit ...b5 4.e4 Nxe4 grabs the pawn back with play, as one engine line shows.
- After Bb5+, block with ...Bd7 and trade light bishops to ease the space problem.
Plans and pawn structure
Without c4, White keeps the c-pawn flexible and can use the c4 square for a bishop or knight. Black's plan is still Benoni-like: ...e6 to open the e-file, ...d6, a dark bishop on e7 or g7, and queenside expansion with ...a6 and ...b5. White wants e4 and later e5 or f4, backed by Nc3 and Nf3. The missing c4 pawn leaves d5 with less pawn support but gives White's pieces more room.
