Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 4.g4 kicks the bishop to g6, and a knight from e2 to g3 adds attackers to the e4 pawn.
  • h4 follows to threaten h5 and trap the g6 bishop, as in the main engine line.
  • 4.f3 hits e4 directly; after ...Nf6 and fxe4 Nxe4, Qf3 hits the knight and the f5 bishop.
  • 4.Bc4 with Nge2 and short castling is a quieter way to develop.

Black

  • Against 4.g4, drop back to g6 and strike with ...e5, then meet h4 with ...h5.
  • ...Nf6 and ...e6 support the bishop and the e4 pawn in the slower lines.
  • ...Nd7 and ...Ngf6 develop without blocking the c-pawn, keeping ...c6 or ...c5 available.

Plans and pawn structure

After 4.g4 Bg6, White has kingside space and threatens h4 and h5 to trap the bishop, while e4 is attacked by Ng3 and possibly f3. Black must answer with ...e5 and ...h5 to fight for the dark squares and keep the bishop safe. In the slower lines with Bc4 or f3, Black develops with ...Nf6 and ...e6 and is happy to trade pieces on e4.

Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

Play 4.g4 at once and follow with Nge2 and h4. The bishop on g6 can get trapped, and e4 falls once your knight reaches g3. Avoid slow development, since Black keeps the pawn and the bishop if you give it time. White scored 55.7% overall in this line.
