Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After 4...h5, switch to the queenside with c4 and Nc3, striking at d5 while g5 becomes a strong square.
  • If Black ignores the threat, h5 takes the g6 square from the bishop, and a later g4 can chase it.
  • Nge2 and Qa4 in the second engine line target Black's queenside after ...Bb4.

Black

  • 4...h5 stops h5 for good and gives the bishop a safe square on g6.
  • ...e6, ...dxc4 and ...Nd7 meet the c4 break, as the main engine line shows.
  • ...Qc7 hits e5, and ...h6 with ...Bb4 is another setup against c4.

Plans and pawn structure

After 4...h5, White's g5 square is a strong outpost for a bishop or knight, but Black's bishop is safe. White switches to central play with c4 and Nc3, and after ...dxc4 recaptures with the bishop. Black finishes with ...Nd7, ...Ne7 and ...c5, aiming at d4. The h4 and h5 pawns stay fixed, so long-term weaknesses on g4 and g5 matter for both sides.
