Caro-Kann Defense: Apocalypse Attack
The Apocalypse Attack is 2.Nf3 d5 3.exd5 cxd5 4.Ne5, a knight jump to e5 before White has played d4. White hopes to use the knight for quick pressure on f7 and d7, while Black wants calm development and an exchange of that forward knight.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- Follow up with d4 to support the e5 knight, giving it a stable square in the Exchange Caro-Kann structure.
- Use Bb5+ to provoke ...Bd7 or ...Nc6, then answer with Nxd7 or Nxc6 to win the bishop pair.
- Put the bishop on d3 and castle short, aiming pieces at h7 while Black's kingside is still undeveloped.
Black
- Play ...e6 and ...Bd6, the engine's first line, to hit the e5 knight and open a path for kingside castling.
- The setup with ...a6 and ...Nc6 challenges e5 directly. After Nxc6 bxc6 Black gets a solid pawn chain on c6 and d5.
- Develop the king's knight to f6 and castle quickly. White has spent a tempo on Ne5 that Black can use.
- Watch f7 and d7. Do not leave a bishop on d7 that the knight can grab for free.
Plans and pawn structure
With pawns on d4 and d5, the game takes on an Exchange Caro-Kann shape, but White's knight already sits on e5. White likes to keep that knight there with d4, Bd3 and short castling, then aim at Black's king. Black's best answer is to challenge it: ...Bd6 or ...Nc6, and if White trades on c6, the recapture ...bxc6 gives Black a sturdy center and a half-open b-file. Black can later push ...c5 to attack d4.

How to play against it
As Black, do not panic about f7. Play ...e6 or ...Nc6 and develop normally. Avoid placing the light bishop on d7 too early, because the knight on e5 takes it. If White gives a check on b5, block with a piece you are happy to trade. The game should soon be a normal, equal Exchange structure.
