Key ideas for both sides
White
- Use Qb3 to hit b7 and d5, especially if Black develops the bishop to g4 or f5.
- Keep the dark bishop on f4 to control e5, then play Nf3, Nbd2 and short castling.
- Plant a knight on e5 and aim the d3 bishop at h7 for a kingside attack.
Black
- Play 6...Bg4, the engine's top choice, to develop with tempo on the queen and invite Qb3.
- Meet Qb3 with ...Na5, hitting the queen, then ...Qd7 or ...Qc8 to keep b7 covered.
- Trade the dark bishops with ...e6 and ...Bd6, reducing White's control of e5.
- Push ...b5 and ...b4 later to attack the c3 pawn in a classic minority attack.
Plans and pawn structure
White's pawns are on c3 and d4, Black's on d5 and e7, with the c-file half-open for Black. White plays Nf3, Nbd2, O-O and Re1, often Qb3 or Qc2, aiming at h7 and the e5 square. Black develops with ...Bg4, ...e6, ...Bd6 and castles short. Black's long-term plan is the minority attack with ...b5 and ...b4 to create a weak pawn on c3.
