Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After ...dxe4 Nxe4, choose a plan that fits Black's system: Ng3, Ng5 or Nxf6+ followed by c3.
  • If Black plays slowly with ...a5, push e5 and add Ndf3 for a French-style space edge.
  • Against ...h6, use Ngf3 and then Nc5 or Bd3, as the third engine line shows.
  • Use the free c-pawn: c3 or even c4 can support the d4 pawn later.

Black

  • Play 3...dxe4, the engine's top choice, and enter the main lines with ...Bf5, ...Nd7 or ...Nf6.
  • The ...a5 idea gains queenside space first, but after e5 Black must hit back with ...c5 and ...Nc6.
  • The ...h6 waiting move takes g5 from White's knights before Black develops ...Bf5.
  • The rare ...Qb6 hits b2 and d4, but it spends time with the queen.

Plans and pawn structure

Compared with the knight on c3, the d2 knight does not block the c-pawn and does not invite ...Bb4. If Black trades on e4, play continues in the main structures: White's d4 pawn against Black's pieces, with Black aiming for ...c5 or ...e5. If Black keeps the tension with ...a5 or ...h6, White can push e5 and gain space, and the game takes on a French character where Black's light bishop is often outside the chain. White's knight from d2 can reach f3 or b3 to support the center.

Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.
