Caro-Kann Defense: Two Knights Attack, Mindeno Variation, Exchange Line

The Exchange Line is 4.h3 Bxf3, where Black answers the question at once and takes the knight. White must recapture right away, choosing 5.Qxf3 for quick development or 5.gxf3 for a stronger grip on e4, and Black then builds the ...e6 and ...Nf6 chain against the two bishops.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Take back 5.Qxf3, the engine's first choice, then Be2 and a d3-d4 plan with the queen eyeing d5 and f7.
  • The 5.gxf3 option keeps the queen home, supports e4 with the f3 pawn and prepares d4 and Qd3.
  • Never skip the recapture. The engine shows 5.Be2 losing heavily after ...Bxe4, because the f3 bishop escapes with a pawn.
  • Against a later ...c5, be ready to open the center while your bishops are the stronger minor pieces.

Black

  • Against 5.Qxf3, play ...e6 and ...Nf6 so d5 is protected twice and the queen hits only pawns.
  • Use ...Nxe4 to trade pieces in the center if White spends time on d3 and d4, as the first engine line shows.
  • Against 5.gxf3, strike with ...c5 after ...e6 and ...Nf6, hitting d4 while White's king is uncastled.
  • Put the dark bishop on d6 or b4, where it does the work the traded light bishop cannot.

Plans and pawn structure

After either recapture, Black has a sturdy chain on c6, d5 and e6 and no light-squared bishop, while White has the bishop pair. With Qxf3, White develops smoothly with Be2, O-O and d4, and the queen adds pressure to d5, so Black must be careful about e4-takes-d5 tricks. With gxf3, White's kingside is broken but the f3 pawn holds e4, the g-file opens for a rook, and the king may go long after d4, Qd3 and Bd2. Black seeks ...c5 or ...dxe4 at the moment White's pieces are not ready.

How to play against it

As White, recapture on f3 immediately; any other move drops a piece. Qxf3 is the simple choice and gxf3 the ambitious one. As Black, finish ...e6 and ...Nf6 before anything else, then choose ...c5 or a trade on e4 to stop the bishops from coming alive.
