Key ideas for both sides
White
- The d4 push is now in the air: with Nf3 behind it, White can open the center and trade on d4.
- Against ...Nf6, g3 and Bg2 lead to the Fianchetto Line, where the engine meets ...e4 with Nh4 rather than Ng5.
- Against 3...Bb4, 4.Nd5 hits the bishop, and after ...e4 the f3 knight jumps to d4.
- Against ...Nge7, take the center with 4.e4 and 5.d4, as the third engine line does.
Black
- 3...Nf6 is the engine's choice and leads straight to Four Knights positions.
- 3...Bb4 4.Nd5 e4 gives sharp play, where Black trades on d4 and the bishop gets exchanged on b4.
- ...Nge7 keeps the f-pawn free for ...f5, but White gets e4 and d4 in first.
- After ...Nf6, castling, ...Bb4 and ...e4 are Black's main sources of space.
Plans and pawn structure
Most games become Four Knights lines after ...Nf6. White fianchettoes and plays Nd5 and Nh4 when Black pushes ...e4, aiming to undermine that pawn with d3. In the ...Nge7 line, White builds e4 and d4 and gets an open center with more space, so Black needs ...f5 quickly. In the ...Bb4 line, pieces come off early and the position opens.
