Key ideas for both sides
White
- Develop Nf3 and Nc3, then fianchetto with g3 and Bg2 so the long diagonal presses on b7 and d5.
- Time the d4 push for a moment when ...cxd4 Nxd4 leaves your knight centralized and Black's pieces undeveloped.
- An e3 and d4 setup with Nc3 gives a sturdy center and keeps the c1 bishop's options open.
Black
- Mirror with ...g6, ...Bg7 and ...Nc6, keeping the c5 pawn as a guard against d4.
- Break the symmetry with ...Nf6, ...e6 and ...d5, claiming central space before White plays d4.
- Meet an early d4 with ...cxd4, trading a wing pawn for a center pawn and opening the c-file.
Plans and pawn structure
Because the pawns match, small move-order details decide the structure. If White gets d4 in with gain of time, the game becomes an Open Sicilian with a c4 pawn and White's pieces centralized. If Black plays ...e6 and ...d5 first, isolated-pawn and Tarrasch-type positions appear. In the double-fianchetto lines, both sides maneuver and queenside pushes like a3 and b4 for White, or ...a6 and ...b5 for Black, become the main plans.

How to play against it
For White: develop with Nf3, Nc3 and g3, and keep d4 in reserve until it gains something concrete. Don't drift into a copycat game where Black equalizes without effort. Watch for ...d5 arriving before you have enough pieces covering that square.
