Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Recapture with 5.Nxe4, the engine's top move. The knight lands in the center and offers a trade on f6.
  • Follow up with Nf3, then Bd3 or Bc4 and a queen move to d2 or e2, ready to castle on either wing.
  • When Black recaptures on f6 with the bishop, the engine line plays h4, eyeing a kingside pawn storm before the black king settles.
  • Avoid 5.Nge2 and 5.Bc4. Both leave e4 in Black's hands longer and score worse for White in the engine lines.

Black

  • After 5.Nxe4 play ...Nbd7 or ...Be7 so a piece, not a pawn, recaptures if White trades on f6.
  • Recapturing ...Bxf6 hands Black the bishop pair and a long diagonal toward d4 and b2.
  • Prepare ...c5 to hit d4. With White's e-pawn gone, d4 is the only central target.
  • Find a job for the c8 bishop with ...b6 and a fianchetto on b7, aiming at the long diagonal.

Plans and pawn structure

With e4 and d5 both gone, White keeps a d4 pawn against Black's e6, so White has more space and easier development. White's best plan is quick development with Nf3, a bishop to d3 and long or short castling, then a kingside push with h4 if Black's king looks static. Black wants trades. Each exchange on f6 makes Black's position easier to handle, and a timely ...c5 or ...e5 removes White's last central pawn and frees the c8 bishop.

Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, take on e4 with the knight and develop fast. You hold a small space edge and should not rush the bishop trade on f6 unless it gains time or wrecks Black's pawns. Skip the knight-to-e2 tries: Black keeps the extra pawn on e4 longer and gets the easier game.
