Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 5.Nf3 is the engine's choice; after ...Ngf6 trade on f6 and develop with Bd3 and Be3.
  • Meet ...c5 with Be3, protecting d4 and preparing a queen move and long castling.
  • A knight on e5, as in the third engine line, is a strong outpost after c3 and Nf3.
  • Avoid trading on f6 too early if Black has not yet committed to ...c5.

Black

  • Play ...Ngf6 next. After the trade on f6, the d7 knight recaptures and keeps the pawn structure intact.
  • Strike with ...c5 to challenge d4 before White completes development and castles.
  • Bring the queen to c7, as in the engine lines, to cover e5 and eye h2.
  • Develop the c8 bishop with ...b6 and a fianchetto on b7 to fight for the long a8-h1 diagonal.

Plans and pawn structure

The trade on f6 is the first decision. After Nxf6+ Nxf6, White plays Bd3, Be3 and Qe2, often castling long, while Black hits d4 with ...c5 and develops with ...Qc7 and ...Be7. White's space and the e5 outpost give a small edge; Black's ...c5 break and quick development keep the game balanced. The d4 pawn is the key target for both sides.

Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, play 5.Nf3 and trade on f6 after ...Ngf6, then develop with Bd3 and Be3. Do not rush the attack; Black's ...c5 is coming and you need d4 protected first. Knights on e5 and long castling give you the best chances.
