Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play 3.d4 to stop Black from setting up ...c5 and ...d4; after ...cxd4 recapture with the knight on d4.
- Follow with Nf3, c4 and short castling, so the g2 bishop and the c4 pawn both lean on d5.
- The c4 push at once invites ...d4, giving Black space; answer with Nf3, d3 and e3 to chip away at that pawn.
Black
- Claim space with ...c5, then ...Nf6 and ...Nc6, a Queen's Gambit shape with colors reversed where you control the center squares.
- After cxd4 and Nxd4, look for ...e5 to gain time on the knight, as both top engine lines show.
- Mind the c8 bishop: with ...e6 played it may need ...b6 and a fianchetto on b7 to find a good diagonal.
Plans and pawn structure
The fight is over d5 and the long diagonal. White's bishop on g2 already eyes b7, so c4 and Nf3 add pressure until Black must give up the center or defend it with ...c6. If Black gets ...c5 and ...Nc6 in, Black has a wide center and White plays against it with d4 trades and piece pressure. After the engine sequence with ...e5, Black owns the central pawns and White targets d5 and e5 with c4, Nc3 and the g2 bishop.

How to play against it
As White, don't hand Black a free center: play 3.d4 or Nf3 first, then c4 once the knight covers d4. If Black plays ...c5 and ...cxd4, take back with the knight and be ready for ...e5 kicking it. Avoid an early e4, which leaves the g2 bishop staring at its own pawn.
