Key ideas for both sides
White
- After 6...Bb4+ calmly block with Bd2 and recapture with the b1 knight, keeping the d4 and e4 duo intact.
- If Black retreats with ...Bb6, push e5 at once: the f6 knight must jump to e4 and Bd5 chases it.
- Against ...d5, take with exd5 and play Qb3 to press on b7 and the d5 square together.
- Castle short and use the open c-file for a rook once the dark-squared bishops are traded.
Black
- 6...Bb4+ is the only good move here: it trades or deflects a defender before White's center rolls forward.
- Follow up with ...d5 to strike at e4, so White's pawn pair cannot advance with e5 and d5.
- Avoid 6...Bb6, which lets e5 drive the knight from f6 and leaves Black's king stuck in the center.
- Once the center opens, castle quickly and put a knight on d5 where it blocks the isolated pawn.
Plans and pawn structure
After 6...Bb4+ 7.Bd2 Bxd2+ 8.Nbxd2 d5 the center dissolves and White usually ends up with an isolated d4 pawn. White plays Qb3, castles, and puts rooks on c1 and e1 to make use of the extra space. Black blockades on d5 with a knight, castles, and later targets d4 with ...Nc6, ...Bg4 or ...Be6 and a rook on the d-file. If Black skips the check, White's e5 push gains time and space for a kingside attack.

How to play against it
As Black, reply 6...Bb4+ and then strike with ...d5 as soon as the check is answered. Do not drop the bishop to b6: after e5 the knight is chased to e4 and then hit by Bd5. Trade one pair of minor pieces, castle, and keep a knight ready for d5.
