Key ideas for both sides
White
- Castle and play c3, then b4 to gain queenside space and push the c5 bishop to a7.
- Use Nbd2 with h3, keeping the knight ready for f1 and g3 or for b3.
- Hold back d4 until the pieces are in place, so the e4 pawn never hangs.
- If Black plays ...a5, keep b4 in reserve and play on the kingside with Re1 and Ng3.
Black
- Play ...d6 and castle, then decide between ...a6 or ...a5 to deal with White's b4 push.
- Retreat the bishop to b6 or a7 early so b4 or d4 does not come with tempo.
- Reroute the queen's knight with ...Ne7 and ...Ng6 to guard the kingside and eye f4.
- Add ...h6 to prevent Bg5, so the f6 knight never gets pinned against the queen.
Plans and pawn structure
The structure is c3, d3 and e4 against d6 and e5, with all central pawns still on the board. White's queenside plan is b4, a4 and sometimes b5, gaining space and chasing the c6 knight. On the kingside White builds Nbd2-f1-g3 and Re1. Black answers with ...a5 or ...a6, retreats the bishop to a7, reroutes ...Ne7-g6 and prepares ...d5 or ...c6 and ...d5. Small improvements decide these games.
Where the engine's main line heads: Quiet center: c3–d3–e4 against e5. A slow center: White has c3, d3 and e4 against e5. Nobody is in a hurry, and the d3–d4 break decides when the game opens.

How to play against it
As White, castle first and then pick a plan: c3 with b4, or Nbd2 with h3. Do not push d4 early, since ...exd4 and pressure on e4 leave you overextended. Against ...Ne7, follow with Nbd2 and h3 and stay compact.
