Italian Game: Rousseau Gambit

The Rousseau Gambit is 3...f5, an aggressive pawn thrust at e4 that leaves the black king exposed on the a2 to g8 diagonal. Black hopes to take over the center, but White gets a clear edge by opening lines with d4 and Ng5 before Black can castle.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play d4 at once: after ...exd4, Ng5 jumps toward e6 and f7, and the queen takes on d4.
  • Use the c4 bishop on the open diagonal; ...f5 has left the g8 and e6 squares weak.
  • After Ng5 Ne5, recapture on c4 with the queen to keep pressure on the light squares.
  • Avoid Bxg8, which gives up the strong bishop and lets Black equalize.

Black

  • After d4, take with ...exd4 and fight for e5 with ...Ne5 to trade the c4 bishop.
  • Against the slow d3, develop with ...Nf6 and ...Bc5 and use the f-file later.
  • Do not take on e4 too early, since that opens the e-file while the king is still on e8.
  • Play ...Qe7 to cover e6 and f7 together after the light-squared bishop leaves.

Plans and pawn structure

After 4.d4 exd4 5.Ng5 Ne5 6.Qxd4 Nxc4 7.Qxc4 Qe7 White has better development and Black's kingside is loose. White castles, develops Nc3 and aims rooks at e1 and f1 to open the center further. Black needs ...Nf6, ...c6 and ...d5 to build a center and shelter the king. In practice Black has scored well in our sample, so White needs to play actively rather than safely.

How to play against it

As White, answer with 4.d4 and follow with Ng5 after ...exd4. Keep the bishop on c4 and win it only for a knight. Do not play Bxg8 to stop ...Nf6; that gives back the advantage. Develop fast and open the center.

Questions

What are the moves of the Italian Game: Rousseau Gambit?

The Italian Game: Rousseau Gambit starts 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 f5. Its ECO code is C50.

Is the Italian Game: Rousseau Gambit good for Black?

Stockfish 17.1 rates the position +1.23 at depth 20, which is a clear edge for White. In 6,370 lichess games from our sample, White scored 46.6%. A dubious but tricky gambit that scores well in practice for Black; White must open the position quickly to prove the edge.

What is the main idea of the Italian Game: Rousseau Gambit?

Black strikes at e4 with ...f5 to take the initiative. The move weakens e6 and the g8 diagonal, so White opens the center with d4 and Ng5 to exploit the loose king.

What should White play next?

The engine's first choice is d4, with d3 and Bxg8 close behind. 4.d4 opens the center at once so the c4 bishop and a knight on g5 can attack the weakened light squares.
