Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Push 5.d5 to kick the c6 knight, then follow with Bd3, c4 and Nc3 for a big queenside space edge.
  • If Black plays ...Ne7 and ...g6, prepare c5 or b4 to break on the queenside where White has more room.
  • Castle and play Nc3 to keep central tension; after ...exd4 recapture with the knight.
  • Use the c4 bishop's pressure on f7 while Black's king is still on e8.

Black

  • After d5, retreat with ...Ne7 and fianchetto with ...g6 and ...Bg7, then castle.
  • Prepare ...f5 to attack White's e4 pawn once the king is safe.
  • If White keeps tension, trade with ...exd4 and develop with ...Be7 and ...O-O.
  • Consider ...Bg4 to pin the f3 knight and add pressure to d4.

Plans and pawn structure

After 5.d5 Ne7 6.Bd3 g6 7.c4 Bg7 8.Nc3 O-O the center is locked with d5 and e4 against d6 and e5. White plays on the queenside with b4 and c5, while Black looks for ...f5 and a kingside attack. If White keeps the tension with O-O instead, the game opens after ...exd4 and White enjoys freer development. Black must time ...f5 well and avoid being squeezed on the queenside.

Where the engine's main line heads: Locked center: d5–e4 against d6–e5. A locked center: White's d5 and e4 against Black's d6 and e5. The game moves to the wings, where each side attacks where its pawns point.

How to play against it

As White, choose 5.d5 for a space edge and queenside play, or 5.O-O for open development. Do not rush Ng5 ideas against f7 when Black can cover it. Plan b4 and c5 and keep the bishop on d3 to support e4.
