Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play c4 to protect d5 and gain space, then d4 and Nc3 to build a center.
- Use Bc4 and quick castling to put pressure on f7 after Black recaptures ...Nxd5.
- Try Bb5+ to disrupt Black's development, then Qe2+ down the open e-file.
- Win back the f4 pawn later with Bxf4 once the king is castled and the knights are out.
Black
- Recapture on d5 with the knight to centralize it and keep an eye on e3 and f4.
- Meet c4 with ...c6 to break White's pawn chain, then ...Bb4+ and castling.
- Keep the f4 pawn with ...Be6 and ...Qe7 when White castles short.
- Develop with ...Nc6 and ...Bd6 to protect f4 and aim the bishop at White's king.
Plans and pawn structure
Black hands back the d-pawn for free development, so the game is about piece activity. White wants a pawn center with c4 and d4 and quick castling. Black plays ...Nxd5, ...Be6 and ...Bd6, keeping f4 as a thorn in White's kingside. If White wins the f4 pawn back, the position is roughly level. If not, Black has the better pawns and easier play.
