Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 3.Nf3 is the engine's first choice: after ...dxe4 the knight takes on e5.
  • 3.exd5 accepts the countergambit and keeps an extra pawn for a while.
  • 3.d3 is a quiet way to meet ...dxe4 with dxe4 and an early queen trade.
  • Keep the e1-h4 diagonal covered so a ...Qh4+ check never comes with force.

Black

  • After 3.Nf3, the replies ...dxe4 and ...Nh6 or ...Bd6 give Black active pieces.
  • Against 3.exd5, choose ...exf4 for easy development or ...e4 to cramp White.
  • Develop the c8 bishop to f5 or g4 quickly once the center opens.
  • Do not leave the e5 pawn hanging to fxe5 without a plan to regain it.

Plans and pawn structure

This is a fight over the center from move two. If White takes on d5, the e-file opens and Black's lead in development matters. If White ignores the counterstrike with Nf3, the center pawns trade off and both sides develop freely. Black's goal is to exploit the weakened g1-a7 diagonal and the open e-file. White's goal is to keep the extra pawn or a stable center and castle safely.

How to play against it

As White, 3.Nf3 or 3.exd5 both keep a fair game. Do not play slow moves that let Black keep both center pawns. Castle early; the f-pawn advance has already opened your king. Black scores well here, so know your chosen line.
