King's Gambit Declined: Norwalde Variation
The Norwalde Variation is 2...Qf6, where Black defends e5 and pressures f4 with the queen. Black wants to keep the center without accepting the gambit, but the queen takes the f6 square from the knight and becomes a target for Nc3, Nd5 and Nf3.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- 3.Nf3 is the engine choice: it develops and prepares Nc3 and Nd5 to hit the queen.
- After ...exf4, put a knight on d5 to attack the queen and the c7 pawn.
- Take back the f4 pawn with Nxf4 once the queen has retreated.
- Avoid exchanging the queen early; Black's queen on f6 is a weakness for now.
Black
- Take on f4 and play ...d6 so the queen can retreat to d8 if needed.
- ...g5 supports the f4 pawn, but it weakens the kingside and the h4 square.
- Develop ...Bc5 and ...d6 for a classical setup if White plays 3.Be2.
- Do not leave the queen on f6 where Nd5 hits it with tempo.
Plans and pawn structure
Black's queen on f6 is the target. White plays Nf3, Nc3 and Nd5 to chase it back, then regains f4 with a knight. Black's pieces lag behind, so White leads in development. Black should accept the loss of time, keep the queen safe on d8 or e7, and catch up with ...d6, ...Nc6 and ...Be7. If Black supports f4 with ...g5, the kingside gets loose, and White can strike with h4 to open lines.

How to play against it
As White, develop Nf3 and Nc3, then jump into d5. Do not chase the queen with pawns; use pieces. Win back f4 with the knight and castle. Black is a tempo or two behind, so open the position rather than closing it.
