Key ideas for both sides
White
- 3.Bb5 starts the Ruy Lopez, putting pressure on the c6 knight, the only defender of e5.
- 3.Bc4 leads to the Italian Game, aiming at f7 and preparing c3 and d4 later.
- 3.d4 is the Scotch, opening the center at once; after the trade on d4 White gets free piece play.
- Quieter tries like Nc3, c3 and Be2 keep options open but give Black fewer problems.
Black
- Against Bb5, the engine line with ...Nf6 and ...Nxe4 (Berlin style) leads to a solid position.
- Against Bc4, develop with ...Nf6 or ...Bc5 and keep an eye on f7 until you castle.
- Against d4, take on d4 and develop with ...Nf6, ready for the trade on c6 and the e5 push.
- Do not try cheap traps too early; sound development scores well here.
Plans and pawn structure
This position is a fork in the road. In the Ruy Lopez Black has to defend e5 for a long time, in the Italian the fight centers on d4 and f7, and in the Scotch the center opens and piece activity matters most. Black's universal plan is ...Nf6, a bishop to c5, e7 or b4, and short castling. Several named traps pass through here, including the Blackburne Shilling Gambit, the Fishing Pole Trap, Noah's Ark Trap and the Tarrasch Trap, so both sides must calculate.

Traps and pitfalls
Blackburne Shilling Gambit trap (Black sets it)
Black leaves e5 hanging with 3...Nd4 and answers 4.Nxe5 with 4...Qg5, attacking the knight and g2. If White grabs f7 with 5.Nxf7, the queen wins the h1 rook and the game ends with a smothered knight mate on f3.
Fishing Pole Trap (Black sets it)
Black leaves a knight on g4 as bait with 5...h5. If White takes it with 6.hxg4, the h-file opens and the black queen and pawn crash through to the white king.

How to play against it
As White, pick one main system and learn its key ideas instead of jumping between move three options. As Black, know one answer for each of Bb5, Bc4 and d4. Avoid moving the e5 pawn's defenders without reason, and watch for Bxf7 or Nxe5 shots before castling.
