Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After 4...Nf6, Bg5 and Qd2, as in the top engine line, hit the f6 knight and prepare long castling.
  • Be2, O-O and a4 give a calm setup that stops ...b5 before it starts.
  • Against ...a6, Be3, Qd2 and O-O-O lead to a direct attack, as the third engine line shows.
  • h3 removes the g4 square from Black's bishop and keeps the f3 knight free.

Black

  • 4...Nf6 leads to a Pirc; the engine follows with ...d5, trading the center pawns.
  • ...c6 and ...Bg4 pin the f3 knight and take a defender away from d4.
  • ...a6 and ...b5 start queenside play against long castling.
  • ...e5 is the main central break once ...Nf6 and ...O-O are in.

Plans and pawn structure

If Black plays ...d5 and the center pawns trade, White keeps the d4 pawn with no e-pawns on the board, while Black has no d-pawn. Then the d4 pawn and the open e-file decide the middlegame: White uses Bc4, Qd2 and long castling, and Black puts a knight on d5 and pressures d4 with ...Bg4 and ...Nc6. In slower lines, Black aims for ...e5 or ...c5 while White keeps a small space edge.

Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.

How to play against it

As Black, use the pin ...Bg4 when White has not played h3, and keep hitting the d4 pawn. As White, decide early between short castling with a4 and the sharper Be3, Qd2 and long castling plan.
