Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play a3 to ask the bishop, then recapture on c3 with the queen, as in the top engine line.
- Take on c5 after ...c5, then use a3, Bf4 and Rd1 for queenside pressure.
- Aim for e4 to grab the center once the queen and knight cover it.
- Keep the bishop pair; it becomes strong when the position opens.
Black
- 4...d5 hits c4 and prepares ...dxc4 and ...b6, as in the top engine line.
- 4...c5 hits d4; after dxc5, ...O-O and ...Bxc5 regain the pawn.
- ...b6 and ...Bb7 control e4 and keep White's center in check.
- Castling first or ...Nc6 are other playable options, each with its own named line.
Plans and pawn structure
White aims for a3, Qxc3 and then e4 or Bg5, using the bishop pair. Black counters with ...d5, ...c5 or ...b6 and ...Bb7, trying to use the lead in development. If the center opens, White's bishops become stronger; if it stays closed, Black's knights can be better.
