Key ideas for both sides
White
- Push 3.d5, the engine's first choice, to kick the knight back to b8 and gain a full tempo.
- Follow with Be3, Qd2 and Nc3, as in the main engine line, and consider castling long with a kingside pawn storm.
- Against ...e5 in the Nf3 lines, use Bb5 to pin the c6 knight and add pressure on the center.
- After ...exd4, recapture with the knight on d4 and keep a comfortable space edge in the center.
Black
- After 3.d5, retreat with ...Nb8 and set up with ...g6, ...Bg7 and ...c6 to hit the d5 pawn.
- If White develops with Nf3 and Nc3, play ...Nf6 and ...e5 for a solid open game.
- Use ...Bd7, as in the engine lines, to break the pin when White plays Bb5.
- Do not let the c6 knight get stuck; if d5 comes, reroute it quickly to b8 and later d7.
Plans and pawn structure
Black's ...d6 keeps the e-pawn flexible. After 3.d5 the knight retreats to b8, and Black often builds a Pirc-style setup with ...g6, ...Bg7 and ...c6, while White uses Be3, Qd2 and Nc3 for space and a possible kingside attack. If White develops with Nf3 and Nc3 instead, Black plays ...Nf6 and ...e5, and after ...exd4 Nxd4 the game resembles a Philidor with active White pieces and Black's bishop on d7.
