Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play 4.e4, the engine's first choice, to build a big center on c4, d4 and e4.
- Develop with Nf3, Be2 and O-O, as in the main engine line.
- Against ...d5, take with cxd5 and play Bf4 and e3 for a calm Slav-like game.
- Use the space to push d5 or prepare f4 once Black commits.
Black
- Fianchetto with ...g6 and ...Bg7 and castle, then strike with ...e5 against d4.
- Play ...d5, the second engine line, to fight the center directly with Slav-type play.
- After ...dxc4, try to hold the pawn with ...b5, as in the third engine line.
- Use the c6 pawn to support ...d5 or ...b5 and limit White's knights.
Plans and pawn structure
Black's ...c6 keeps options between ...d5 and ...e5. If White plays e4, Black usually sets up with ...g6, ...Bg7 and ...O-O, then strikes with ...e5. White develops with Nf3 and Be2 and plays for space. If Black chooses ...d5, the game becomes a Slav type position where White uses Bf4 and e3. Either way, White has more space and Black must break at the right time.
