Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play 4.Qe2. It attacks the e4 knight along the e-file and sets up discovered checks with the e5 knight.
- If Black answers with ...Nf6, Nc6+ uncovers check from the queen and wins Black's queen on d8.
- After 4...Qe7 take with 5.Qxe4 and meet ...d6 with d4, keeping an extra pawn after the exchanges on e5.
- The calm 4.d4 or 4.d3 also keep a small edge without forcing play.
Black
- After 4.Qe2 play ...Qe7. It is the only move that holds the e-file and keeps material level for now.
- After 5.Qxe4 strike with ...d6, attacking the pinned knight on e5 to win the piece back.
- Develop with ...Nc6 to hit the e5 pawn and get ready for ...Bd7 or ...Be6.
- Never retreat the knight from e4 while White's queen and knight sit on the e-file in front of your king.
Plans and pawn structure
After 4.Qe2 Qe7 5.Qxe4 d6 6.d4 dxe5 7.dxe5, White has an extra pawn on e5 and both queens face each other on the e-file. White wants to keep that pawn with Bf4 and Nc3, finish development and trade queens. Black hopes ...Nc6, ...Bd7 and active rooks bring enough play to regain e5. If Black wins it back, the game is level; if not, White grinds an endgame.

Traps and pitfalls

How to play against it
As White, play 4.Qe2 and know the trap: after ...Nf6, Nc6+ wins Black's queen with a discovered check. After 4...Qe7 5.Qxe4 d6, recapture with d4 and keep the e5 pawn safe. Do not rush to trade queens until the pawn is secure.
