Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play 2.e3, the engine's top move, which opens the f1 bishop to defend b4 if needed.
  • Develop Bb2 and Nf3, then a3 so ...Qb6 and ...a5 do not win the b4 pawn.
  • The quick 2.Bb2 is the Schuehler Gambit idea; it lets Black take on b4 after ...Qb6 or ...e5.
  • Use c4 to fight for d5 once the queenside pawns are secure.

Black

  • Bring the queen to b6 to hit b4 and f2 together when White's pieces are loose.
  • Play ...a5 to attack b4; after b5 the c6 pawn can capture and open the c-file.
  • Build a center with ...d5 and ...Nf6, then develop the c8 bishop to g4 or f5.
  • The quiet ...e6 and ...Be7 setup keeps everything solid if White plays well.

Plans and pawn structure

The pawn on c6 is a quiet move with a sharp point: the queen and a-pawn can both attack b4. White answers with e3, Bb2, a3 and Nf3, then plays c4 to fight for the center. Black takes d5, develops naturally and keeps ...a5 as a lever. If White ignores the threats, Black wins the b4 pawn; if White guards carefully, the game is a level strategic fight with Black slightly easier to play.
