Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After 4...Nxe4, play 5.Bd5 to hit the knight and the c6 knight together, as the engine shows.
  • Trade on c6 and capture on e5 with the knight to win a pawn back.
  • If Black declines with ...Be7 or ...Bc5, play d3, castle and use Re1 for a normal Italian setup.
  • Keep the c4 bishop aimed at f7 only while Black's king is still in the center.

Black

  • Take with 4...Nxe4. It is the engine's clear first choice and gives Black the better game.
  • Answer Bd5 with ...Nf6, and after Bxc6 recapture with the d-pawn to open the c8 bishop.
  • Use the bishop pair and the open d-file for quick development after the trades.
  • If you decline, ...Be7 with ...d5 is the safe way to equalize.

Plans and pawn structure

This gambit is doubtful for White: e4 simply hangs. After 4...Nxe4 5.Bd5 Nf6 6.Bxc6 dxc6 7.Nxe5 Nd7 8.Nf3, Black has the two bishops and quick development along the open d-file, and White's queenside lacks the c3 knight. White must catch up with d4, castling and Re1. If Black declines the pawn, the position becomes a quiet Italian structure with d3 and c3 for White and level chances.

How to play against it

As Black, take the pawn with 4...Nxe4. Meet Bd5 with ...Nf6, recapture on c6 with the d-pawn, and develop toward the open d-file. Do not panic about the pin on the long diagonal; your pieces come out fast and the bishop pair helps later.
