Queen's Gambit Declined: Baltic Defense, Pseudo-Slav

The Pseudo-Slav arises when Black meets 3.c4 with ...e6 and 4.Nc3 with ...c6, putting the f5 bishop outside a Slav-style pawn chain. White now probes the empty b7 square and the active bishop, while Black wants a solid c6-d5-e6 wall with quick development.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 5.Qb3 at once hits b7, which lost its guard when the bishop went to f5, and also adds pressure to d5.
  • Bf4 offers a trade of dark bishops; after ...Bd6 and Bxd6 Qxd6, White's knight can go to h4.
  • Nh4 chases the f5 bishop. Taking it with the knight gives White the bishop pair in a closed center.
  • A calmer path is e3, Bd3 and castling, accepting a bishop trade on d3 and a slow middlegame.

Black

  • Meet Qb3 with ...Qc7 or ...Qb6, guarding b7 without loosening the c6-d5 chain.
  • Answer Bf4 with ...Bd6 to trade the active White bishop, then develop with ...Ne7 or ...Nf6.
  • Keep a retreat for the f5 bishop. ...Bg6 or ...Be4 avoids losing it to Nh4.
  • Develop with ...Nd7 and ...Ngf6 and castle short; the pawn wall makes Black's king safe.

Plans and pawn structure

The c6-d5-e6 chain is very hard to break, so White plays on the queenside and against the light bishop. Qb3 with Bf4 asks Black to solve b7 and the c7 square at once, and in the top line the queens come off with White a bit more active. Black wants ...Nd7, ...Ngf6, ...Be7 and castling, then a freeing ...dxc4 or ...c5. If the f5 bishop gets traded for a knight, Black's position is solid but passive.

How to play against it

As White, start with Qb3 and make Black defend b7 right away. Follow with Bf4 to aim at c7 and keep a knight jump to h4 in reserve. Avoid slow play like e3 and Bd3 too early, because it lets Black trade the problem bishop and equalize.
