Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play Bg2 and castle, then use Nc3 and the e4 square to fight Black's light-squared bishop.
  • Against ...c6 and ...d5, jump to e5 with the knight and support it with Nc3.
  • If Black checks on b4, block with Bd2 and recapture with the queen after the trade.
  • Look for the d5 push when Black's bishop goes to a6, gaining space and closing lines.

Black

  • The ...Bb7 reply is the classic answer, contesting e4 and the long diagonal from the first moment.
  • The ...Ba6 reply hits c4 at once and forces White to spend a move defending it.
  • Build ...c6 and ...d5 to make a pawn triangle that blunts the g2 bishop.
  • Trading bishops with ...Bb4+ and ...Bxd2+ eases Black's game and saves time.

Plans and pawn structure

The long diagonal is the main battlefield. White wants the g2 bishop to dominate and uses Nc3 and Ne5 to control e4 and d5. Black either opposes it with ...Bb7 or targets c4 with ...Ba6, forcing an awkward defense. With ...c6 and ...d5 Black gets a pawn triangle on c6, d5 and e6, which is solid but asks Black to find a plan with ...c5 or ...Nbd7 later. White usually castles short and plays on the queenside.

Where the engine's main line heads: Black's pawn triangle: c6, d5, e6. Black's triangle of pawns on c6, d5 and e6: very solid, but it can shut in the c8 bishop.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As Black, pick one setup and stay consistent. ...Bb7 leads to classical play, ...Ba6 creates tension around c4. Avoid moving the bishop twice without reason. If White pushes d5 early, be ready to take on d5 and use the open e-file against White's center.
