Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play 3.e4 at once and build the classical center with Nc3 and Nf3.
  • Develop Be2 and castle short, keeping the center pawns on c4, d4 and e4 well supported.
  • Use 3.Nc3 and Bf4 against an early ...d5 to gain time on the queenside.
  • Look for d5 later to cramp the c6 and d6 pawns and take more space.

Black

  • Play ...Nf6, ...g6 and ...Bg7, then castle and aim the bishop at d4.
  • Prepare ...e5 or ...d5 later to challenge the big center once development is done.
  • Keep ...c6 useful: it supports ...d5 and can prepare ...b5 against c4.
  • Do not lose more time: ...d6 already cost a tempo, so develop fast before breaking.

Plans and pawn structure

White has more central space after e4, with pawns on c4, d4 and e4 and easy development. Black's setup with ...g6, ...Bg7 and castling is solid, but needs a break: ...e5 hits d4, and ...d5 is possible if White overextends. White plans Nf3, Be2 and short castling, then pushes d5 or e5 to gain more space. The c6 pawn gives Black some ideas with ...b5, but White's development is easier.

How to play against it

As White, take the center with 3.e4 and develop quietly with Nc3, Nf3 and Be2. Do not rush pawn pushes before castling. As Black, expect to be a little cramped, so finish development and castle before choosing between ...e5 and ...d5.
