Réti Opening: Penguin Variation
The Penguin Variation is 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 d4 3.Rg1, a joke move where the rook steps to g1 and gives up kingside castling. Black can grab more space and develop freely, while White has no real plan beyond returning the rook later.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- Admit the mistake and play Rh1 back, as the engine line does, to restore normal development.
- Use a3 and d3 to build a modest setup against Black's d4 pawn and avoid further losses.
- Look for b4 once the pieces are ready, hitting Black's space on the queenside.
Black
- Develop with ...Nf6 and ...Nc6 and support the d4 pawn with ...c5 and ...e5.
- Use the extra tempo to build a broad center; White cannot punish it soon.
- Keep pieces active and avoid early trades, since White's position is the one that is behind.
Plans and pawn structure
Black simply develops. With ...Nf6, ...c5, ...Nc6 and ...e5, Black owns the center and has more space everywhere. White's rook move wasted time and removed the option of short castling, so White must play slowly with a3, d3 and e4 just to stay in the game. Black's plan is to finish development, castle, and then open lines with ...e5-e4 or queenside play while White is still untangling.
What the engine plays from here
Stockfish 17.1 at depth 20 rates the position −1.46: a clear edge for Black. Its three top choices for Black:
- −1.46 3...Nf6 4.a3 c5 5.d3 Nc6 6.Rh1
- −1.37 3...Nc6 4.b4 Nxb4 5.Qa4+ Nc6 6.Ne5
- −1.37 3...c5 4.d3 Nc6 5.e4 e5 6.Rh1
Pawns, from White's side.
How to play against it
As Black, do not try to refute 3.Rg1 by force. Just develop with ...Nf6, ...c5 and ...Nc6, and build a big center with ...e5. You get an easy edge without any risk. Avoid early queen raids that give White targets and time.
