Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play 5.a3, the top engine move, kicking the knight back toward c6.
  • Push d5 to gain space and take the c6 and e6 squares from Black's knights.
  • Use Qa4+ to force Black's knights onto awkward squares on the queenside.
  • Develop with Nc3 and Qe2 once the b4 knight has been driven back.

Black

  • Retreat the knight to c6 after a3 and aim it at e5 or d7 when d5 comes.
  • Fianchetto with ...g6 and ...Bg7 to aim the bishop at White's center.
  • Use ...e6 to strike at White's d5 pawn and open lines for the f8 bishop.
  • Avoid leaving knights stuck on a6 or b4, where White's pawns take their squares.

Plans and pawn structure

This is a dubious line for Black. The knight on b4 can be pushed back with a3, and White gains space with d5 and c4. Black's knights end up on awkward squares, while White develops freely with Nc3, Nf3 and Qe2. Black's best is to regroup with ...N4c6 and ...Ne5, then aim for ...g6 and ...Bg7. White's space advantage usually lasts deep into the middlegame.

How to play against it

As White, play a3 and d5, then develop with Nc3. Do not let the knight stay on b4 where it hits c2. As Black, retreat quickly with ...N4c6 and aim the pieces at White's center instead of wasting more moves on the queenside.
