Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Develop with Nf3 and use Ne5, as in the top engine line, to take central space and eye f7.
  • Hit the queen with Bf4, and if Black answers ...Nh5, retreat Be3 and keep the bishop pair.
  • Try Be3, Bd3 and Nge2 with f3 later, building a strong center against ...Bg4.
  • Use h3 and g4 against ...Bf5 to gain kingside space before castling.

Black

  • Develop ...Nf6 at once and put the c8 bishop on f5 or g4 before ...e6.
  • ...c6 keeps White's knight out of b5 and gives the queen a retreat to c7.
  • Meet Bf4 calmly: ...Nh5 or ...Qd8 avoids losing time with the queen.
  • Use ...Nbd7 against a knight on e5 to trade off White's most active piece.

Plans and pawn structure

The structure is White's d4 pawn against Black's c6 and e6 pawns, like a Caro-Kann. White develops with gain of time against the queen on d6 and tries to use space with Ne5, Bf4 and sometimes g4. Black finishes development with ...Nf6, ...Bf5 or ...Bg4, ...e6 and ...Nbd7, then castles. Black's breaks are ...c5 and ...e5, and the main target for Black is the d4 pawn.

Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.

How to play against it

As White, develop with Nf3 and look for Bf4 or Ne5 to hit the queen. You can also play Be3 and Bd3 with Nge2. Do not rush pawn moves on the queenside, because Black's position has no weak pawns and you need development, not structure changes.
