Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play 5.Bg5 to pin the f6 knight. After 5...Nbd7 6.e3 Qa5 7.Nd2 White keeps the pin and holds c4.
- Choose 5.e3 with Qc2, Bd3 and O-O for a quiet game, then answer ...dxc4 with Bxc4 and aim for e4.
- Try the fianchetto with g3 and Bg2, then push e4 once Black has taken on c4, as in the third engine line.
- In the Botvinnik lines, use e4 and e5 to gain space and attack while Black is busy holding c4.
Black
- Take on c4 at the right moment and support the pawn with ...b5, then play ...Bb7 and ...c5.
- Against 5.e3, set up with ...Nbd7 and ...Bd6, castle, and prepare the ...e5 break after ...dxc4.
- Meet 5.Bg5 with ...Nbd7 and ...Qa5, using the pin on the c3 knight to pressure the queenside.
- Keep the c8 bishop in mind: it usually comes out to b7 once ...b5 has been played.
Plans and pawn structure
In the 5.e3 lines Black usually plays ...Nbd7, ...Bd6, ...O-O and ...dxc4, then strikes with ...e5 or with ...b5 and ...c5 in Meran style. White recaptures with the bishop and pushes e4 to take the center. In the 5.Bg5 lines the play is more forcing: Black can take on c4 and hold the pawn with ...b5, while White pushes e4 and e5 to attack the kingside. With 5.g3 White gives up the c4 pawn for a while and uses the long diagonal and the e4 push for pressure.
What the Semi-Slav is about
The Semi-Slav comes after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6. Black has pawns on c6, d5 and e6, a very sturdy triangle that White cannot easily break. The cost is that the c8 bishop is shut in for now. Black's main idea is to take on c4 at the right moment, support the extra pawn with ...b5, put the bishop on b7 and break with ...c5. A second plan is ...Bd6 and ...e5.
From 15440 games White scored 54.2%, and the engine sees a small edge for White after 5.Bg5, 5.e3 or 5.g3. Despite the quiet look, many Semi-Slav lines lead to some of the sharpest positions in 1.d4 openings.
The main variations
The Accelerated Move Order, 2...e6 3.Nc3 c6, is the most played way to reach Semi-Slav positions, with 4973 games. It allows White a risky extra option: the Marshall Gambit, 4.e4, where White gives the d4 pawn for fast development. Black can also try the Noteboom, 4.Nf3 dxc4, and hold the pawn with ...b5.
The Main Line with 5.e3 is the calm path. White develops with Bd3 and Qc2 and plans e4. After 5...Nbd7 and 6.Bd3 Black chooses between ...Bd6 and the famous Meran Variation, 6...dxc4 7.Bxc4 b5, where Black gains queenside space with tempo and the engine sees full equality.
With 5.Bg5 the game gets tactical. In the Botvinnik Variation, 5...dxc4 6.e4, Black holds the pawn with ...b5 and White attacks with e5. The engine line runs 6...b5 7.e5 h6 8.Bh4 g5 9.Nxg5 hxg5, with wild complications. The Anti-Moscow Gambit, 5...h6 6.Bh4, is another double-edged line where Black can take on c4 and push ...g5.
Typical plans for White
White's main plan in the calm lines is the e4 push. With Qc2, Bd3 and O-O White prepares it, and if Black takes on c4, the bishop recaptures and e4 follows. In the lines with Bg5, White uses e4 and e5 to gain space and hit the kingside while Black's pawns are on the queenside.
- Keep the pin on f6 when possible. It slows down Black's ...e5 and ...c5 breaks.
- Against ...b5, use a4 to attack the chain and open the a-file.
- With the g3 fianchetto, aim the g2 bishop at c6 and a8 and play e4 when ready.
Typical plans for Black
Black's plan starts with ...dxc4. Then ...b5 holds the extra pawn or gains space, and the bishop goes to b7. The key break is ...c5, which opens the long diagonal for that bishop and hits d4. In the ...Bd6 lines, Black prefers ...e5 after taking on c4.
- Time ...dxc4 well. Taking after White has spent a move on Bd3 means the bishop recaptures on c4 with a lost tempo for White, which is why the Meran waits for it.
- In the Botvinnik, know the moves. One wrong move in that line can lose quickly.
- Against 5.Bg5, ...Qa5 is a useful idea: it pins the c3 knight against White's king and prepares ...dxc4 or ...Bb4.
Mistakes club players make
- Black leaving the c8 bishop asleep. Without ...dxc4 and ...b5 or ...e5, that bishop stays shut in.
- White playing e4 too early. If the center is not well supported, ...dxe4 and ...c5 leave White with weak pawns.
- Entering the Botvinnik unprepared. Both sides need concrete knowledge. Pick the 5.e3 lines if you have not studied it.
- Black castling into an attack. After ...h6 and ...g5 lines, the kingside is loose, and castling short can be risky.
- White taking back on c4 with the queen. This often loses time to ...b5 or ...Nb6.
Who should play it
The Semi-Slav is for Black players who want both a safe center and winning chances. It suits players who are ready to learn the main lines, especially the Meran and the Botvinnik. For more relaxed players, the 5.e3 lines with ...Bd6 and ...e5 offer a quieter path.
For White, the calm 5.e3 with Qc2 is a good practical weapon that needs less theory than the 5.Bg5 lines. Players who like long diagonals can also try the g3 setup from the third engine line, where White gives up c4 for a while and later pushes e4 with pressure on c6.

How to play against it
As White, decide early between the safe 5.e3 and the forcing 5.Bg5, and learn one of them well. In the 5.e3 lines, play Qc2 and Bd3 and be ready to recapture on c4 with the bishop. Avoid entering the Botvinnik or Anti-Moscow lines without preparation; they are full of forcing tactics.
