Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 5.Nc3 is best: it defends e4 and develops. ...d6 then gives a Scheveningen.
  • If Black plays ...Nc6 after Nc3, trade on c6 and push e5 to gain space and chase the f6 knight.
  • 5.Bd3 also guards e4; follow with O-O and c4 to grab space.
  • Avoid e5 too early, before e4 is backed by a knight, since ...Qa5+ ideas hit loose pawns.

Black

  • After Nc3, ...Bb4 pins the knight and threatens to take on e4.
  • ...d6 gives a solid Scheveningen setup with ...Be7 and ...O-O to follow.
  • ...Nc6 invites Nxc6 bxc6 and e5; know that the f6 knight then goes to d5.
  • Keep the c-file in mind; ...Qc7 and ...Rc8 point at White's c3 knight.

Plans and pawn structure

The ...Nf6 move forces White to commit to e4 protection. With Nc3, the game moves to Scheveningen or Four Knights structures. In those, White often castles kingside and plays f4 and Qf3, or castles long with Be3 and Qd2. Black keeps a solid center with ...e6 and ...d6, then counterattacks with ...b5 and ...Bb7 against e4. If White chooses Bd3, a Maroczy setup with c4 is the main plan.
