Key ideas for both sides
White
- 3.Nxe5 wins a clean pawn; after ...Nc6, trade on c6 and develop with Nc3 and g3.
- Keep pieces safe after the capture. Watch for ...Qe7 or ...Qa5 tricks against the knight.
- If you do not want to take, Bc4 and c3 with d4 also give a good game.
Black
- After Nxe5, ...Nc6 at least develops with tempo and forces a trade on c6.
- Follow with ...Nf6 and ...d5 to fight the center and use open lines.
- Look for active piece play to make up for the lost pawn.
- Next time keep e5 covered with ...d6 or ...Nc6 on move two instead.
Plans and pawn structure
After 3.Nxe5, White is a pawn up with a healthy position. White develops with Nc3, g3 and Bg2, castles and slowly converts. Black has a half-open b-file and a lead in development after ...Nc6, ...Nf6 and ...d5. These give some play, but the extra pawn is solid. If White does not take the pawn, Black gets a closed center with ...Nc6 and ...d6 and a normal game.
