Key ideas for both sides
White
- 3.Nc3 develops and supports e4 before d4, as the top engine line shows.
- 3.d4 opens the center at once; Nxd4 gives a good open game with an extra tempo.
- In lines with ...a6 and ...Qc7, Bg5 or g3 add threats while Black's kingside sleeps.
- h4 is an odd but real try, gaining kingside space before Black commits the king.
Black
- ...Bb7 hits e4 from the long diagonal and makes White spend moves defending it.
- ...e6 and ...a6 set up a Kan-like structure with the bishop already on b7.
- ...Qc7 eyes e5 and the c-file and supports a later ...b5.
- Avoid ...Bb7 too early if Nb5 jumps are possible; ...a6 first keeps b5 covered.
Plans and pawn structure
Black's ...b6 aims for a bishop on b7 and pressure on e4. White develops with Nc3 and d4, recaptures with the knight and builds a strong center. Black then sets up ...e6, ...a6 and ...Qc7, similar to a Kan but with the queenside bishop already committed. White can use Bg5, g3 and Bg2, or a kingside attack to keep the edge. Black hopes for ...b5 and ...d5 later to free the position.
