Key ideas for both sides
White
- 3.Nc3 blocks the a5-e1 diagonal, breaking the pin on d2 so that d4 becomes possible.
- After d4 cxd4 Nxd4, Bd2 unpins the c3 knight and threatens Nd5 or Nb5 ideas.
- A calm Be2 and e5 push also works, gaining space against the early queen.
- c3 and d4 builds a full center, taking away the queen's target squares.
Black
- After Nc3, ...a6 stops knight jumps to b5, then ...Nf6 develops.
- Retreat the queen to c7 if White plays Bd2, keeping the c-file and e5 covered.
- Against e5 ideas, ...dxe5 and ...Bd7 keep pieces active.
- Avoid more queen moves; finish developing the minor pieces first.
Plans and pawn structure
Black's early queen gives White an extra tempo in development, and usually the queen ends on c7 after a retreat. White plans Nc3, d4 and Bd2, with a lead in development and pressure on the center. If Black falls behind, White can play e5 or Nd5 to open lines. Black's plan is solid development with ...a6, ...Nf6 and ...e6, aiming for Scheveningen-like play once the queen settles.
