Sicilian Defense: Nimzo-American Variation
The Nimzo-American Variation is 4...d5 after 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4, an early central strike before Black has developed the kingside. It is a dubious try: White opens the position with exd5 and gains time on Black's queen, while Black hopes for quick piece play.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- 5.exd5 Qxd5 brings Black's queen out early, and Be3 with Nc3 gains time on it.
- After ...e6 and ...Bb4, Qg4 hits g7 and the bishop, exploiting the dark squares.
- 5.Nxc6 bxc6 and exd5 also works, leaving Black with a weak c-pawn.
- Use the extra development to castle quickly and put rooks on the d- and e-files.
Black
- Recapture ...Qxd5 and develop ...e6 and ...Bb4 to pin the c3 knight.
- Answer Qg4 with ...Nge7, defending g7 and keeping the pin.
- After Nxc6 bxc6, the c6 pawn supports ...d5 and the half-open b-file helps.
- Do not waste more time with the queen; develop and castle as fast as possible.
Plans and pawn structure
Black's ...d5 opens the center while the king is still in the middle. White's plan is to trade on d5 and gain time on the queen with Nc3 and Be3, then use Qg4 and castling to exploit dark-square weaknesses. Black tries to develop with ...e6, ...Bb4 and ...Nge7, but White's lead in development grows. If White keeps the initiative, Black faces long defense. If Black finishes developing, the position becomes playable.
