Sicilian Defense: Polish Gambit

The Polish Gambit is 2...b5, a pawn offer meant to lure White's bishop away and open lines on the queenside. Black hopes for fast development with ...Bb7 and ...a6, but White can simply take with Bxb5 and keep a clean extra pawn.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Take with 3.Bxb5; after ...Bb7, develop with Nc3 and O-O, and keep the bishop safe on a4 when ...a6 comes.
  • The extra pawn is healthy: White has no weaknesses, and e4 is protected by the c3 knight.
  • Declining with 3.d4 or 3.a4 also gives White a good game, but the capture is the cleanest.

Black

  • After Bxb5, use ...Bb7 against e4 and ...a6 to gain time on the bishop.
  • Develop with ...e6 and ...Nc6, then hope for play on the open a- and b-files.
  • Expect a hard fight a pawn down: there is no forced way to win the material back.

Plans and pawn structure

This is a dubious gambit. After 3.Bxb5 White is a pawn up with normal development, and the engine line shows White calmly castling and keeping the bishop on a4. Black's only compensation is the bishop on b7 hitting e4 and some open queenside files. White should develop, play d4 or d3 at the right moment, and avoid moves that hand Black real targets.

How to play against it

As White, take the pawn with 3.Bxb5 and finish development. Keep e4 defended, castle quickly, and drop the bishop back to a4 when Black plays ...a6. There is no need to look for more: an extra pawn with a sound position is enough.
