Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Use the free c-pawn: after ...e5 and Nb3, play c4 and Nc3 to clamp down on d5.
  • Develop with Be3 and Qd2, then castle where it suits; the f3 pawn keeps e4 solid against the f6 knight.
  • Against slow moves like ...e6, Nc3, Be3 and g4 give White a ready-made kingside attack.

Black

  • Strike at once with 5...e5 so the knight has to retreat to b3, then develop with ...Be7 and ...Be6.
  • If White plays c4, use ...Nc6 and ...a5 to pressure the b3 knight and the dark squares.
  • Avoid passive ...e6 setups that allow g4 and a fast pawn storm with f3 already played.

Plans and pawn structure

With f3 in place and the c-pawn still on c2, White can choose a Maroczy bind with c4 or a normal attacking setup with Nc3. After 5...e5 6.Nb3, Black has a backward d-pawn but good development with ...Be7, ...Be6 and ...Nc6. If White builds the bind, Black fights with ...a5 and ...a4 to dislodge the b3 knight and with ...Nd7 heading for c5. If Black plays slowly, White expands with g4 and castles long.

Where the engine's main line heads: Maroczy bind: White pawns on c4 and e4. The Maroczy bind: White pawns on c4 and e4 clamp the d5 square, so Black's ...d5 and ...b5 breaks are hard to play.

How to play against it

As Black, answer with 5...e5 and force the knight back before White plays c4 or Nc3. Develop quickly and look for ...a5 against a knight on b3. Avoid quiet ...e6 lines, where f3 and g4 help White's kingside attack. Keep the d6 pawn covered by your pieces.
