Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After 3...e5 4.axb4 Bxb4, play 5.c3 to kick the bishop and prepare d4 with tempo.
  • Use the open a-file for the rook and aim for d4 while Black's pieces are still at home.
  • Against 3...d5, take with exd5 and gain time on the queen with Nf3 and Nc3.
  • The gambit only works with fast piece play, so develop before trying to win back material.

Black

  • 3...e5 is the engine's best: it claims the center and lets the f8 bishop recapture on b4.
  • ...d5 is also good, hitting e4 and opening lines while White's queenside is loose.
  • ...e6 with ...d5 later is a solid setup that keeps the extra pawn without risk.
  • Do not grab a3 automatically; the second pawn costs time and opens lines for White's rooks.

Plans and pawn structure

This is a dubious gambit: Black stands clearly better after the central replies. White's plan is axb4, c3 and d4, with a lead in development and the a-file open. Black's plan is to take central space with ...e5 or ...d5, develop, and castle before White can open the center. If Black accepts with ...bxa3, the game becomes the Carlsbad Variation, which is calmer but gives White more open files.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As Black, play 3...e5 or 3...d5 and develop. After 4.axb4 Bxb4 5.c3, retreat the bishop to e7, then play ...Nf6 and castle. Avoid moving the queen repeatedly in the center, because White wants Nc3 and Nf3 with tempo. The extra pawn will matter later.
