Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play c3 straight away to question the d4 knight, the engine's first choice.
  • After ...b5, retreat Bf1 so the bishop stays safe and later supports the queenside.
  • The pawn push d6 is a practical option, returning the pawn to break up Black's center and develop.
  • Avoid Nc3 here: after ...h6 and ...Bg4 Black takes over the initiative.

Black

  • Answer c3 with ...b5, deflecting the c4 bishop away from f7 and from defending d5.
  • Take back the pawn with ...Nxd5 once the bishop retreats, putting a second knight in the center.
  • If White answers ...Nxd5 with Nxf7, take back with ...Kxf7; after cxd4 exd4 material is level and Black's center is strong.
  • Keep ...Nxc2+ in mind whenever White neglects the c2 pawn or leaves the a1 rook loose.

Plans and pawn structure

The d4 knight is the heart of Black's play: it hits c2 and blocks White's d-pawn. White's plan is c3 to chase it and quick development with Bf1, d3 and short castling. Black's plan is ...b5 and ...Nxd5, then active piece play with ...Bb7 and the queen on the long diagonal. If White grabs on f7, the engine line shows a messy game where Black's king walks but the central pawns roll. In this sample White scored only 41.4%, so the practical burden is on White.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, play c3 at once and retreat the bishop to f1 after ...b5. Keep c2 covered, and do not drift with Nc3, which hands Black ...h6 and ...Bg4 with easy play. Returning the pawn with d6 is a safe way to finish development.
