Italian Game: Two Knights Defense, Ponziani-Steinitz Gambit
The Ponziani-Steinitz Gambit is 4.Ng5 Nxe4, where Black grabs the e4 pawn instead of defending f7. It is dubious: the engine refutes it with Bxf7+, after which Black's king is stuck in the center and White's d4 and d5 hit hard.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play Bxf7+, the engine's top move; after ...Ke7 push d4 to open lines while the king sits on e7.
- After ...h6, take with Nxe4 and push d5 to attack the c6 knight and expose the king.
- Avoid Nxf7: ...Qh4 and ...Nd4 give Black dangerous threats against f2 and e2.
- Do not trade with Nxe4 on move five; ...d5 then gives Black a free center.
Black
- After Bxf7+, the king goes ...Ke7 and must hope to win the bishop back with ...Kxf7 later.
- Use ...h6 to kick the g5 knight and ...Nd4 to centralize after d5.
- If White errs with Nxf7, strike with ...Qh4 and ...Nd4, hitting f2 and the queen.
- If White plays Nxe4, answer ...d5 and gain a big pawn center with tempo.
Plans and pawn structure
After Bxf7+ Ke7 d4, White opens the center while Black's king is stuck on e7 with no castling. White wants d5, Nc3, castling and a rook on the e-file. Black's plan is to recover the f7 bishop with ...Kxf7 and then shelter the king, but the open center makes that hard. If White chooses Nxf7 or Nxe4 instead, Black gets strong central play and the gambit works.

How to play against it
As White, play Bxf7+ and then d4 while the black king stands on e7. Keep the initiative with Nxe4 and d5, and get the rooks to the center files. Avoid the greedy Nxf7, which walks into ...Qh4, and the timid Nxe4 before checking on f7.
