Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play Bg2 next so the bishop watches d5 and the long diagonal.
  • Use Na4 to hit a bishop on c5, then return to c3 if Black retreats to e7.
  • Against ...d5, take exd5 and develop with Nge2, preparing d4 later to claim the center.
  • Castle short and consider f4 to open the f-file once the kingside pieces are out.

Black

  • Develop with ...Nc6 and ...Bc5, aiming the bishop at f2 while White fianchettoes.
  • If Na4 hits the bishop, retreat ...Be7 calmly; the knight on a4 is offside.
  • ...d5 is the direct break: after exd5, ...c6 offers a pawn for quick development.
  • Castle short and keep the e5 pawn backed by ...d6 if White plans f4.

Plans and pawn structure

The g3 setup is slow, so Black has time to develop. White's plan is Bg2, Nge2, castling, d3 and f4, opening the f-file and pressuring e5 and d5. Black's plan is ...Nc6, ...Bc5 or ...Be7, castling and ...d5 or ...d6 to hold the center. The knight dance Na4 and Nc3 against the bishop on c5 is a common way to gain time. In the sample, players under 1200 did poorly with White, as the slow setup gives quick counterplay.

Where the engine's main line heads: Open game: e4 against e5. An open game: e4 against e5. Development, the f7 and f2 squares, and the d4 or d5 break are what count.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As Black, develop normally with ...Nc6 and ...Bc5 and do not fear the knight jump to a4, which only gains a little time. If you want to fight, ...d5 early is fine. Do not let White play f4 for free; keep e5 well supported.
