Key ideas for both sides
White
- 2.e4 c5 3.c3 builds for d4; after ...d5 4.e5 gains space and blunts the g7 bishop.
- 2.d4 Nf6 3.c4 Bg7 4.Nc3 d5 5.Qb3 hits d5 and b7 directly.
- Against a quick ...d5, take with cxd5 and aim for e4 to build a broad center.
Black
- Play ...Bg7 early so the bishop presses on d4 and the long diagonal toward b2.
- Against 2.e4, ...c5 and ...d5 strike the center, then ...Nc6 and ...Bg4 pressure d4 and f3.
- Against d4 and c4, ...Nf6 and ...d5 reach Grunfeld positions with pressure on White's center.
Plans and pawn structure
Everything depends on the g7 bishop. White wants to limit it with pawns on d4 and e5, or a solid c3 and d4 chain, then play on the side where space is larger. Black wants to hit the center with ...c5 and ...d5, trade White's central pawns and open the long diagonal. In the 2.e4 c5 3.c3 d5 4.e5 line, Black plays ...Nc6 and ...Bg4 against d4. In the Grunfeld lines, Black aims ...c5 and ...Nc6 at d4.

How to play against it
As White, take space with 2.e4 or 2.d4 rather than mirroring the fianchetto. Keep the d4 pawn well supported, since the g7 bishop will aim at it. Do not let Black trade off your central pawns for free; meet ...d5 with e5 or cxd5.
