Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 2.e4 Bb7 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5 kicks the knight, then Nxd5 trades it off.
  • 2.Nc3 d5 3.e4 dxe4 4.Nxe4 pushes for central control and quick development.
  • 2.c4 Nf6 3.g3 Bb7 4.Bg2 meets the b7 bishop head on along the long diagonal.

Black

  • Play ...Bb7 right away to press on e4 and pin down White's central plans.
  • Against e4 and e5, use ...Nd5 to trade White's c3 knight and keep the bishop on d5.
  • After 2.c4 Nf6 3.g3, play ...Bb7, ...e6 and ...Be7 for a solid Queen's Indian-style setup.

Plans and pawn structure

White's key decision is whether to take the center with e4 and gain space with e5, or blunt the b7 bishop with g3 and Bg2. In the e4 lines White has central space and quick development, and Black must watch the d5 square and the e-file. In the c4 and g3 lines the game is calm, with both sides castling short and fighting for e4 and d5.

How to play against it

As White, grab the center with 2.e4 and develop the knight to c3 to defend it. Push e5 when it gains time on the f6 knight. Avoid a slow setup that leaves e4 to the b7 bishop. After 4.e5 Nd5, trading on d5 with the knight leaves Black's bishop on d5, where it can be hit by c4 later.
