Key ideas for both sides
White
- Recapture with Nxd4 when possible, avoiding the queen tempo loss of the Center Game.
- Against ...Bb4+, block with 4.Nbd2, then Bd3 and short castling, aiming to win d4 back later.
- After ...Nc6 Nxd4 ...Nf6, the trade on c6 and e5 kick the knight, as in the third engine line.
- If Black holds d4 with ...c5, Bc4 and short castling give gambit play.
Black
- 3...Bb4+ forces a decision, then ...Nc6 and ...Nge7 keep the d4 pawn safe for a while.
- 3...Nc6 heads for a Scotch-like game. After 4.Nxd4 Nf6, Black hits e4 at once.
- 3...Bc5 4.Nxd4 Nf6 hits e4 at once: after 5.Nb3 Nxe4, White answers by trading on c5.
- Keep the king safe before chasing the extra pawn; short castling comes before any ...c5 or ...d5 adventure.
Plans and pawn structure
If the knight recaptures on d4, the game looks like a Scotch: White has the e4 pawn, Black has easy development and ...d5 or a rook on e8 to pressure e4. If Black holds the pawn with ...Bb4+ and ...Nge7, White plays for development with Bd3, short castling and a3, hoping to win d4 back. The e4 pawn is White's main asset and also Black's main target. Black wins it back easily in several lines, so White has to watch tactics on e4.

How to play against it
As Black, any of ...Nc6, ...Bb4+ or ...Bc5 is fine, as long as you follow up actively. Develop with ...Nf6, castle, and attack e4. Do not hold the pawn with ...c5 and then fall behind in development, because White's Bc4 and short castling come fast.
