Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 4.Qe3 is the main move: the queen stays central and supports a later Nc3 and long castling.
  • 4.Qa4 moves the queen off the central files and supports Nf3 and c3, though ...Nf6 and a check on b4 follow.
  • 4.Qc4 aims at f7 but gives Black ...Nf6 and ...Bb4 with tempo.
  • Plan Bd2, Nc3 and long castling to get the king out of the center.

Black

  • Follow with ...Nf6 to hit e4 on every queen retreat, so White must spend another move defending it.
  • Pin a knight on c3 with ...Bb4, or use the check on b4 when the queen leaves the d-file.
  • Castle short and play ...Re8 to pressure e4 and any queen on the e-file.
  • Strike with ...d5 once your pieces are developed and the king is castled, opening the center against White's king.

Plans and pawn structure

Black already has a lead in development, and the queen must move again. After the retreat, Black plays ...Nf6, ...Bb4 or ...Be7, castles and pushes ...d5 to open the game. White's main setup puts the queen on e3, the bishop on d2, the knight on c3 and the king on c1, then uses the d-file and kingside pawns. The center is open, so tempo matters more than structure. In our sample this line scored under 50% for White.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, choose one queen retreat and know its follow-up. With Qe3, play Nc3, Bd2 and long castling, and watch for pins on the e-file. Do not move the queen again unless forced; every extra queen move gives Black more development.
